Pregnancy & Pregnancy Loss
The journey toward becoming a parent can bring hope and excitement, but it can also bring uncertainty, anxiety, and profound loss.
Even the decision about starting a family can bring unexpected emotions and questions. Pregnancy itself can be an emotionally complicated time. Alongside anticipation and joy, you may find yourself experiencing anxiety, fear, uncertainty, or a sense that you’re not feeling the way you expected to feel.
For those who have experienced pregnancy loss, the experience can be especially isolating. Grief may exist alongside hopes for the future, fear about trying again, or the difficult experience of watching others move forward with pregnancies and families while you are grieving your own loss.
Therapy can offer a compassionate space to make room for these experiences without judgment or expectations about how you should be feeling.
When the path to parenthood feels uncertain
There is no single way to experience the path toward parenthood. Questions about whether or when to have children, fertility challenges, pregnancy, and previous experiences of loss can all bring emotions that may feel complicated or difficult to talk about.
You may find yourself feeling anxious about what lies ahead, grieving what you expected this time in your life to look like, or struggling with uncertainty when so much feels outside of your control. Sometimes these feelings can coexist with hope, excitement, or gratitude, which can make the experience even more confusing.
Becoming a parent can bring its own unexpected emotions. The early months of parenthood may feel very different from the joyful, fulfilling experience we’re often led to expect. You may love your baby and still feel overwhelmed, disconnected, lonely, or uncertain about who you are in this new role.
Therapy can provide a place to explore these feelings honestly, including the ones you may not feel comfortable sharing with the people around you.
A space for the complicated feelings
There can be a lot of expectations around pregnancy and parenthood—about how you should feel, what you should want, and what this time in your life is supposed to look like. When your actual experience doesn’t match those expectations, it can be difficult to know where to put the feelings that don’t fit.
In therapy, there is room for all of it. We can explore the anxiety, grief, uncertainty, changes in identity and relationships, or conflicting emotions you may be experiencing without needing to judge or resolve them right away.
My approach is warm and collaborative. Together, we can work toward a greater understanding of what you’re experiencing and help you find ways to move through this period with more self-compassion, clarity, and connection.
